Welcome to Belulang – a cosy village at the foot of the mystical Mount Batukaru, surrounded by towering mountains, emerald green paddy fields and untouched wilderness. Time dances to its own rhythm here, determined by the seasons, the course of the sun and the magical lunar calendar. In this tranquil paradise, the villagers embrace the rhythm of nature and cultivate their ancient customs.
The car really has to puff along as it struggles along the narrow, winding mountain roads to Belulang. And they get narrower and narrower the closer you get to Belulang. It’s not easy to reach, but paradise isn’t just around the corner. And so, the journey itself is an experience in itself.
High mountain ranges alternate with dense jungle and lush green rice fields. Children play by the clear mountain river, farmers go about their work in the fields and every now and then a clucking chicken runs along the village road and brings the already slow traffic to a standstill – this Bali spot is a hidden gem, pure and untouched.
Belulang is divided into the lower and upper village and each corner of Belulang has its own unique charm. The lower part of Belulang is home to the village’s main temple and the hot spring – Air Panas Belulang. This isn´t only a favourite meeting place for villagers to bathe in the holy water, Air Panas Belulang is also a popular excursion destination for the Balinese from all over the island.
The 15-minute walk to the upper part of the village of Belulang takes you to Balikaru – the activity centre is located in the heart of village. You walk past emerald-green rice fields and a second village temple, which is used by the village for traditional ceremonies. Along the way, there are always breathtaking views of the indescribably beautiful mountain landscape. And if you are lucky and the sky is clear, Mount Batukaru and its volcanic buddies offer a true spectacle on this day.
The charming village of Belulang is like a postcard, with houses standing shoulder to shoulder along the cosy village path. Each house is built according to the Balinese feng shui principle, called Asta Kosala Kosali. Step into one of these traditional houses and get a taste of true village life! The friendly locals are happy to show you their daily routine and traditions. Take part in our village life program and get an authentic insight into Balinese culture and even a cooking class.
Watch the rice farmers working in the fields, the women planting rice at lightning speed, and catch a glimpse of village life as they gather for a chat after a hard day’s work. In the afternoons, children swarm to Bale Belajar to learn, sing and play together – it’s in the heart of the village and a bustling centre of smiles, fun and curiosity!
One of the gems of Belulang? The cold spring with its sacred temple, which is wonderfully embedded in the tropical nature and is completely hidden in the tropical rainforest.
Special ceremonies await you at this magical place during the full moon or on important Balinese festivals. Immerse yourself in the spiritual world of the Balinese and find your way to inner peace during our traditional blessing and purification ceremony, which is led by the Mangku, the village priest of Belulang.
Belulang blends in wonderfully with the marvellous nature and shows Bali in all its beauty. You can discover all of this on a hike or guided trekking tour. Whether a short flying visit through the rice fields, an adventurous trekking tour through the jungle or a hike along the old Subak system – the traditional irrigation of the rice terraces and now UNESCO World Heritage Site – Belulang and its surroundings are like a treasure chest and offer fascinating opportunities for nature lovers and explorers.
And if you have a little more time, take an extended hike to the rice terraces of Jatiluwih, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or discover the Yeh Hoh waterfall, which is part of our programmes.
You will experience a unique mixture of village life and fascinating nature on the trekking tour through the rainforest of Mt Batukaru. In addition to active hiking, adventurous river crossings and picnic in the jungle, this tour also takes you to the village of Belulang and to Balikaru for a homemade lunch by the locals.
Belulang: these are unspoilt nature and lovely people, this is the untouched, the real Bali and pure village idyll – this is the paradise of the gods.
