It doesn’t take much, because the constant warmth and the alternating sun and rain make everything blossom or turn green – and usually after a short time. And so, the Balikaru garden has turned into a mini paradise: tropical fruits mingling with herbs and spices, while fragrant frangipani flowers and vibrant hibiscus add a pop of colour in the mix.
And that everything is thriving so beautifully we´ve to say thank you to Ibu Puja, our green fairy, who brings our garden to life. She puts her heart and soul into every leaf and every flower and does her daily work with passion – whether it’s sowing, the daily care of the little sprouts or the harvest for the cookery lesson at Paon Balikaru.
Ibu Puja and your tour guide are ready to whisk you away to the idyllic garden, ready to unravel the mysteries of Balinese herbs and spices with you. They are happy to share invaluable knowledge about the Balinese flora.
Why are chillies actually berries, but peanuts are not nuts at all? Why does kencur help against toothache and why does the banana tree only bear fruit once in its life? Why is there a jackfruit tree in almost every Balinese homestead and why does lemongrass help against mosquitoes? Questions upon questions and there is not just one answer to everything.
Stay curious and learn lots of interesting facts about the exotic plants, their use in Balinese cuisine or as home remedies in traditional medicine as you stroll through the Balikaru Garden. And to make sure it’s not just theory, you should definitely visit our cooking class and learn about the thousand-year-old tradition of Jamu’s – as the healthy power drinks are called in Bali.
