Tempeh Kecap

Ready for a Balinese vegan dish

prepare fried tempeh

This traditional Balinese pan-fried dish is a real explosion of flavour. Crispy fried tempeh, topped with a sweet, tasteful sauce and spiced up with fiery hot chillies will make every Bali traveller happy.

Tempeh has been known in Indonesia for thousands of years and the fermented soya bean cake is traditionally used in Balinese cuisine. The flavour is relatively neutral, somewhat nutty and this offers numerous possibilities for transforming tempeh into the most delicious Bali dishes. Depending on the ingredients, spices and herbs used, tempeh can always be used to create new and surprising dishes.

For our typical Bali meal, tempeh is deep-fried in oil and by adding sweet and sticky soy sauce (kecap manis), fragrant lemongrass, Indonesian bay leaf and – of course – fiery chillis, a quick, unforgettable stir-fried dish is created in no time at all. Roasted peanuts add the kick.

Conjuring up a delicious tempeh kecap is not rocket science. The secrets behind it are the crispy fried tempeh, a crunchy texture and the perfect blend of sweetness and spiciness.
